About The Park

The park was named after Union Army Major General Issac I. Stevens, who acted as the first territorial governor of Washington and died in the Civil War. The Fort is known as the only military base on American soil to have been attacked by enemy fire in World War II, after undergoing an attack by Japanese submarines in 1942.

Today, the 4,300 acre park is home to a number of trails, sport facilities, and picnic areas. Guests can enjoy a leisurely stroll or bike through the 8 miles, or take part in cross-country skiing in the winter months! History buffs will also enjoy a tour through the fort’s rare gun battery and the remnants of the Peter Iredale shipwreck.
